Udemy vs Coursera vs edX

Three platforms for learning this, and they are not really competing for the same job. One has the NFT catalogue, one has the credential, and one is free if you do not need a certificate. Here is which to use for what.

The short version: for NFTs specifically, Udemy — it is where the catalogue is, and the courses cost about the same as lunch. For blockchain fundamentals with a credential that carries weight, Coursera. For the computer science underneath at no cost, audit an edX course.

These platforms are often compared as though they compete. They largely do not. They answer different questions, and the useful thing is knowing which question you are asking.

Where it is strong

By far the deepest NFT catalogue, near-permanent discounts, a 30-day refund window, and large review counts that make quality genuinely assessable.

Where it is not

Anyone can publish, so quality varies enormously and courses can sit unmaintained for years. Certificates carry no weight with employers.

Best for: Practical, specific skills at low cost — which describes almost all NFT learning.

Courses come from universities and large companies with real academic oversight. Certificates carry more weight, and the blockchain offerings are more rigorous.

The audit track is genuinely free and includes full course content from serious institutions. Strong on blockchain theory and cryptography.

Where it is not

Almost nothing NFT-specific, and the material is academic rather than practical. You will understand Merkle trees and still not know how to mint.

Best for: Understanding the computer science underneath, at no cost.

Choose by what you actually want

"I want to understand NFTs and maybe buy one"

Udemy, or nothing. A well-reviewed three-hour course for about $12 is an efficient way to get the fundamentals with someone pacing you. Honestly, though, our free guides cover most of the same ground — the course buys you structure, not exclusive information.

"I want to build on a blockchain"

Udemy for practical Solidity — the catalogue is much deeper and the most-reviewed course has 28,000+ ratings. Supplement with the free Solidity documentation and Ethernaut, which are better than most paid security material. Coursera if you want the computer science alongside it.

"I want something for my CV"

Coursera, and be realistic about what it buys. A university-backed blockchain certificate is a credible line on a CV in a way a Udemy certificate is not. Neither substitutes for demonstrable work — in this field, a verified contract on a testnet says more than either.

"I want to spend nothing"

Audit on edX for the academic material, and use the free resources listed here for the practical side. Between the Ethereum Foundation documentation, CryptoZombies and this site, there is very little a paid beginner course covers that you cannot get for nothing.

What certificates are actually worth

Worth being blunt about, since it drives a lot of purchasing decisions.

  • Udemy completion certificates: essentially nothing to an employer. They confirm you watched the videos.
  • Coursera and edX certificates: some weight, particularly from recognised universities. A plausible CV line, not a qualification.
  • A deployed, verified contract: more persuasive than either, and free to produce.

In a field this young, demonstrable work outweighs credentials by a wide margin. Buy courses for the skills. If a certificate matters to you, know what it is buying.

A note on Udemy pricing

Udemy list prices of $50–75 are largely notional — courses are discounted to $11–15 most of the time. Never pay list price; if a sale is not running, wait a few days. The 30-day refund window is also real and easy to use, which makes a $12 purchase a genuinely low-risk experiment.

If you want university-backed blockchain fundamentals and a credential that appears on a CV plausibly, yes. If you want to learn how to mint an NFT and set up a wallet, it is considerably more money and time than the task requires, and Udemy or free material will serve you better.
