The tooling problem, specifically

Most well-reviewed Solidity courses were recorded between 2021 and 2022. Since then:

  • Truffle and Ganache — once the default — were deprecated. Courses that build their whole workflow around them are teaching a dead toolchain.
  • Hardhat and Foundry are now the standard. Foundry in particular changed how testing is done, using Solidity rather than JavaScript.
  • Solidity itself moved through several minor versions with meaningful changes — custom errors, transient storage, and stricter defaults.
  • web3.js largely gave way to ethers.js and viem on the front end.

This does not make the courses worthless — the EVM execution model, gas mechanics, storage layout, reentrancy, and the ERC-721 and ERC-1155 standards are all unchanged, and that is the hard part. It means you learn the concepts from the course and the toolchain from current documentation. Budget an evening for that and you are fine.

A realistic path

  1. JavaScript first, if you need it. Not optional in practice. Every course assumes it by hour three.
  2. Ethereum fundamentals. Accounts, transactions, gas, the EVM. Skipping this produces developers who can copy a contract but cannot debug one.
  3. Solidity. The language, then the security patterns. Reentrancy, access control, integer behaviour, and why "it compiles" means very little here.
  4. ERC-721 and ERC-1155. Read the OpenZeppelin implementations directly — they are well written and the canonical reference.
  5. Deploy to a testnet. Sepolia. Verify the contract on Etherscan. This is the step that turns theory into a portfolio.
  6. Then a front end. wagmi and viem, or ethers.js. This is where the "complete dApp" courses earn their place.

On security, which these courses under-teach

A deployed contract is immutable and holds real money. That combination is unlike almost any other programming context, and a four-hour course cannot give you the instincts it requires. Before anything of yours holds value: read the OpenZeppelin contracts, work through Ethernaut and Damn Vulnerable DeFi, and internalise that "my tests pass" is not the same as "this is safe". Every course on this page treats security as a module. In practice it is the whole job.

Free alternatives worth knowing about

CryptoZombies, Speedrun Ethereum and the Solidity documentation itself are all free and genuinely good. The Solidity docs in particular are better written than most paid material. Buy a course for structure and pacing — not because you assume free means worse.

Common questions

Do I need to know JavaScript before learning Solidity?
For the contract itself, not strictly — Solidity syntax is closer to C or Java. But every practical course builds a front end, deploys with JavaScript tooling and tests in JavaScript, so in practice you will hit it within the first few hours. Comfortable JavaScript makes every one of these courses substantially easier.
Which course should a working developer start with?
The Ethereum and Solidity developer's guide with 28,000+ ratings remains the reference, though some tooling sections predate the current Hardhat and Foundry norm. If twenty-four hours is too much, the ten-hour alternative rated 4.5 across 3,400 reviews covers the same ground more tightly.
How out of date is the tooling in these courses?
Meaningfully, and you should plan for it. Most were recorded when Truffle and Ganache were standard; the ecosystem largely moved to Hardhat and Foundry. The Solidity language and the EVM model they teach are still correct — it is the build and deploy chapters that need cross-checking against current documentation. Budget an evening for that.
Should I learn Ethereum or Solana?
Ethereum first, in almost all cases. The tooling, documentation and job market are far deeper, Solidity concepts transfer to every EVM chain including Polygon, Base and Arbitrum, and the teaching material is better. Learn Solana when you have a specific reason to target it.
Can I get a job from these courses?
Not from the certificate — nobody in this industry cares about a Udemy certificate. From the skills and a portfolio of deployed, verified contracts, possibly. Web3 hiring contracted sharply from its 2021 peak, so treat this as a skill to add rather than a career switch guaranteed by a $15 purchase.
